Job Description

We are in search of an Operations Manager who will report to the General Manager, BEL Contracting. This critical position provides overall leadership for site operations and field personnel, and is responsible for project execution, production tracking, and optimization.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Team Leadership:

  • Lead our teams to operate with a culture safety, respect, professionalism, and efficiency.
  • Coach, motivate and clearly communicate expectations to team members and stakeholders.
  • Be accountable for project teams’ performance and development.
  • Oversee all craft employee life cycle activities and changes for field teams from hiring through to departure.
  • Staff projects with effective and skilled employees.
  • Manage the recruitment, onboarding, adjustments, and discipline of crew resources in coordination with the General Manager, HR and superintendents.


Management & Control of Projects:

  • Participate in tendering processes as needed.
  • Review the project’s scope of work with the project team, and establish technical approach, mitigate risks, and enhance opportunities.
  • Ensure schedule-driven, resource-loaded project execution plans/schedules are developed.
  • Verify that field operations have the facilities, materials, tools, equipment, craft, and other resources to operate efficiently and coordinate changes as necessary.
  • Coordinate with the Equipment Division and procurement team to oversee BEL’s equipment fleet and small tools management.
  • Provide equipment utilization forecasts to the Equipment Division, resource tracking and allocating equipment to projects with assistance from superintendents.
  • Maintain the overall job schedule and upcoming work schedules, working with the General Manager and Estimating Manager.
  • Review project cost and forecasting reports with project leadership and adjust resourcing and equipment plans to enhance productivity.
  • Work with project managers and the health & safety team to ensure that site safety inspections, incident and near-miss reporting, site-specific instructions, and general safe operating procedures are established and followed.
  • Communicate regularly with clients, obtain feedback, and focus on client satisfaction.
  • Pro-actively communicate with all stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve issues, using a positive collaborative approach to ensure quick and effective solutions.
  • Assist the General Manager with management tasks as needed (e.g., project management, data tracking, financial analysis, client relationship, etc.).
  • Be the subject matter expert as it pertains to project execution and available opportunities such as fill sites and material supply.
  • Contribute regularly to ideas, processes, planning, systems, tools that make the business better.


Candidate Qualifications:


  • Over 10 years of experience in the civil construction industry (utilities, roadways, earthworks and structures), with at least 3 years of experience in a management role.
  • Strong and established industry relationships.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with cost control, schedule, execution, and contract/change management.
  • Ability to inspire and lead project teams (field and office) to achieve project objectives.
  • Excel under pressure and possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make key decisions with confidence.
  • Honest and straightforward in dealing with others and always acts with the utmost professional integrity and in the best interest of the Company.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Exposure to B2W and construction estimating software is an asset.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required.


Compensation:

The starting salary this position is $160,000 CAD per year. The exact compensation may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, internal equity and other criterion.
